The vast majority of the wealthiest Americans live in California and New York, residing in ZIP codes where homes typically cost around $2 million or more, a new study reveals. Of the 100 most expensive ZIP codes to own a home in the U.S., 61 are in California and 18 are in New York, according to an analysis by online realtor RealtyHop. The median listing price for a home in the 10 most expensive ZIP codes is $4 million or more. For the fourth straight year, Atherton, California, is the most expensive ZIP code in the U.S. to own a home, the study says. Homes cost more than $4 million in the most expensive in greater New York- and Los Angeles-area neighborhoods, with Sagaponack, New York, leading the pack, according to an analysis that compared the nation's two largest metropolises. The median price for a home in the tony Hamptons enclave costs $6,972,500, according to online realtor RealtyHop. That's followed closely by 90210, perhaps the most famous ZIP code in the U.S. due to the popular TV show "Beverly Hills, 90210." Homes in this part of Beverly Hills cost $6,699,500. In third place is Water Mill, one of the five Hamptons ZIP codes in the top 10 rankings, which are listed below.
The Hamptons dominate the rankings for the most expensive neighborhood in the Northeast, with Sagaponack, New York, taking the top spot. A beachside village that's home to Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, Sagaponack is second only to Atherton, California for most expensive U.S. ZIP code in 2022, in terms of median value for homes, according to data provided by realty service RealtyHop. The second most expensive Northeast ZIP code is in Boston's Back Bay area. It's a small area for a ZIP code, consisting of only a few blocks of luxury condos next to the Prudential Center. Homes in these ZIP codes are close to $6 million.

Near Stanford University, and home of tech executives and venture capitalists, Atherton has resisted development of multifamily properties, which has kept homes large and exclusive. In second place is Sagaponack, New York, an enclave of a few hundred residents in the Hamptons, followed by the posh Bel Air neighborhood in Los Angeles. Third place is perhaps the most famous ZIP code in the U.S.: 90210 — namesake of the '90s teen melodrama "Beverly Hills, 90210."
